Government Was Just Kidding About Repaying Student Loans

THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HAD
CREATED A PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH STUDENT LOAN
DEBT TEN YEARS AGO. THE PROGRAM ALLOWED PEOPLE WHO
WERE IN STUDENT LOAN DEBT TO ENTER PUBLIC SERVICE JOBS
THAT WERE APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT, AND AFTER 10 YEARS,
THE REMAINING STUDENT LOAN DEBT THAT THEY HAD WOULD BE
FORGIVEN. FAST-FORWARD 10 YEARS LATER, AND
ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE ACCEPTED INTO THIS
PROGRAM GOT A LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT ñ THAT SAID THAT THE PUBLIC
SERVICE JOBS THAT THEY DID BUT MAYBE DIDN’T WANT TO DO
DON’T QUALIFY FOR THIS PROGRAM. LET’S KEEP IT REAL, THESE
STUDENTS WERE LIED TO AND COMPLETE THE SCAMS, BUT LET ME
GIVE YOU MORE INFORMATION. ALL RIGHT, SO, THE FORGIVENESS
PROGRAM OFFERS MAJOR BENEFITS FOR BORROWERS, ADVOCATES SAY, TO
THE POINT OF PERSUADING SOME PEOPLE TO TAKE PUBLIC SERVICE
JOBS INSTEAD OF MORE LUCRATIVE WORK IN THE PRIVATE
SECTOR. THE PROGRAM GENERALLY COVERS
PEOPLE WITH FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS WHO WORK FOR 10 YEARS AT A GOVERNMENT OR
NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, A DIVERSE GROUP THAT INCLUDES
PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEES, MUSEUM WORKERS, DOCTORS AT PUBLIC
HOSPITALS AND FIREFIGHTERS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
APPROVED THE PROGRAM IN 2007 IN A SWEEPING, BIPARTISAN BILL. SO, BOTH DEMOCRATS AND PUBLICANS
REALIZED THAT THEY WANTED TO HELP THESE STUDENTS OUT, AND IF
THEY PROVIDE A PUBLIC SERVICE THAT WE APPROVE, THEN AFTER 10
YEARS OF WORKING IN THAT FIELD, WE WILL FORGIVE THEIR
REMAINING STUDENT LOAN DEBT. AND NOW THEY GO, YOU BELIEVED
US? HA-HA. SO HERE’S THE UPDATE: THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
SUGGESTED THAT BORROWERS COULD NOT RELY ON THE PROGRAMS
ADMINISTERED OR TO SAY ACCURATELY WHETHER THEY QUALIFY
FOR DEBT FORGIVENESS. THE THOUSANDS OF APPROVAL
LETTERS THAT HAVE BEEN SENT BY THE ADMINISTRATOR, FEDLOAN
SERVICING, ARE NOT BINDING AND CAN BE RESCINDED AT ANY
TIME, THE AGENCY SAID. THIS IS WHY PEOPLE HATE
POLITICIANS, AND SOMETIMES GOVERNMENT. WE HAVE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN,
WHAT IS THE GOOD PART OF THE GOVERNMENT AND THE BAD PART
OF THE GOVERNMENT. GOOD GOVERNMENT SOMETIMES GIVES
YOU SOCIAL SECURITY AND HELP SAVE YOUR LIFE WITH MEDICARE,
AND THERE’S WONDERFUL PARTS OF THE GOVERNMENT. AND THEN THERE ARE ATROCIOUS
PARTS, WHERE THEY THINK, WELL WE ARE ABOVE YOU, AND SO YOU HAVE
TO PLAY BY THE RULES, AND IF YOU STEP OUTSIDE THE RULES FOR ONE
SECOND, I MEAN, YOU WERE AT A PARKING METER THAT RAN ONE
MINUTE LONG, WE ARE GOING TO JACK YOUR CAR. AND BY THE WAY, AS WE FOUND OUT,
THAT IS SOMETIMES SYSTEMATICALLY DONE IN PLACES LIKE FERGUSON, WE
FOUND OUT THAT THEY TARGETED THE POOR, THAT IF THEY VIOLATED ANY
RULES THEY WOULD GIVE THEM TICKETS, ETC., AND TRY TO TAKE MONEY FROM THE
POOR COMMUNITIES MORE THAN THEY ñ AND BLACK COMMUNITIES ñ
MORE THAN THEY WOULD FROM WHITE COMMUNITIES, OR RICH
COMMUNITIES. SO IF YOU JUST VIOLATE THE
RULES FOR A SECOND, THEY ARE LOOKING FOR YOU AND THEY WILL
LAY THE HAMMER DOWN ON YOU. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THEM THEY
ARE LIKE, YOU LISTEN TO US? AND YOU WORKED FOR THE PUBLIC
SECTOR FOR 10 YEARS? THAT’S A DECADE. OH, JUST KIDDING. NOW, IT’S NOT FOR EVERYBODY, A
LOT OF FOLKS ARE STILL ABLE TO GO THROUGH THE PROGRAM, BUT
FOR SOME FOLKS THEY ARE SAYING, NOPE, WE NOW CHANGE THE
RULES ON YOU COMPLETELY. AND THAT’S WHY PEOPLE GET
FURIOUS, AND RIGHTFULLY SO, AT POLITICIANS. AND HERE’S THE REALITY OF HOW
THIS WHOLE PROCESS WORKS. EVERY YEAR, THE PEOPLE WHO APPLY
FOR THIS PROGRAM HAVE TO HAVE SOME SORT OF MEDICATION,
BASICALLY NOT REAPPLIED BUT ñ SOME SORT OF COMMUNICATION WITH
THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO ENSURE THAT WHAT THEY ARE DOING
IS FOLLOWING THE RULES. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHERE THE
DISCONNECT HAPPENS, OR WHY IT IS THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN UNDER A NEW
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT THESE STUDENTS ARE BEING TOLD THAT
THIS WAS NONBINDING, AND EVEN THOUGH YOU’VE BEEN WORKING IN
THIS JOB THAT MIGHT BE LESS LUCRATIVE FOR 10 YEARS, MAYBE IT
DOESN’T QUALIFY. I WOULD BE ENRAGED. I’VE BEEN WORKING AT TYT FOR 10 YEARS, BUT I MADE THE DECISION
TO MAKE LESS MONEY. THESE PEOPLE WERE KIND OF LIKE,
NOT FORCED, BUT THINK ABOUT IT, IF YOU HAVE A TREMENDOUS
ABOUT A STUDENT LOAN DEBT AND YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO
GET IT FORGIVE AND IF YOU TAKE A SPECIFIC TYPE OF JOB, YOU
ARE GOING TO TAKE THAT JOB AND THAT’S WHAT THESE PEOPLE
DID. THIS ESSENTIALLY DICTATED THEIR
LIVES AND THEIR CAREER PATHS. YOU CAN PUT ANY NUMBER ON IT
THAT YOU WANT. LET’S SAY YOU HAD A STUDENT
DEBT THAT WAS WHAT TO GET FORGIVEN, AND MAKE UP A NUMBER,
IT’S $20,000. STUDENT DEBT IS SOMETIMES
DIDACTIC. AND THEY GO, OH, NO, I LIKE TO
YOU AND YOU STILL HAVE THAT $20,000 DEBT. YOU WERE COUNTING ON THAT EXTRA
FOR WORKING A JOB THAT DID NOT PAY YOU AS WELL, THAT WAS PART
OF YOUR EXPECTED COMPENSATION BASED ON THE RULES THAT THEY
GAVE YOU. AND AT THE END THEY GO, JUST
KIDDING, YOU STILL OVER $20,000. IF WE PROMISED YOU A BONUS AT
THE END AND YOU GOT TO THE END AND WE WERE LIKE, NO WE GIVE
YOU NOTHING, WE LIED TO YOU THE WHOLE TIME. I BE REALLY UPSET, BUT I’M A
SUCKER, I’D PROBABLY STILL BE HERE. I MEAN, DON’T USE THAT AS ñ OH, TAKE NOTES ñ MEANS TO DO ANYTHING SHADY IN
THE FUTURE. BUT PEOPLE WOULD BE VERY UPSET. AND AGAIN, THIS PROGRAM, OF
COURSE THEY CONSENTED TO IT, THE STUDENTS DID, BUT IT DID
DICTATE THEIR CAREER PATHS, AND THAT’S BIG, THAT’S A BIG
DEAL. BY THE WAY, FOUR BORROWERS AND
THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION HAVE FILED A LAWSUIT, AND WE
WILL SEE HOW IT PLAYS OUT, BUT I DO BELIEVE THAT THE BORROWERS
HERE HAD A STRONG CASE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE ALL OF
THE DIFFERENT CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE ñ CORRESPONDENCE WITH
THE DEPARTMENT THAT INDICATED THAT THE JOB THEY WERE WORKING
YET QUALIFIED FOR THE PROGRAM. IT’S AMAZING HOW MUCH MORE
RIGHT-WING WASHINGTON GETS EVERY SINGLE YEAR. ’07, THOSE WERE NOT GOOD TIMES,
THOSE WERE THE BUSH CHENEY YEARS, BUT EVEN THEN, A
BIPARTISAN BILL THAT INCLUDED REPUBLICANS PASSED, THAT SAID
IF STUDENTS COME OUT OF COLLEGE AND THEY ARE DOING SOME
WONDERFUL AND GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY WE SHOULD
REWARD THEM. REPUBLICAN SAID THAT. NOW 10 YEARS LATER THEY ARE LIKE, NO
WAY, DON’T CARE, HERE’S SOME BOOTSSTRAPS FOR YOU, BY THE WAY,
KEEP PAYING OUR BANKER FRIENDS.

Now nobody is going to want jobs where they can help poor and underserved people.  Nobody wants to spend all that time and money going to school only to get a job that pays horribly and does not have that added incentive of forgiving their student loans.  You take the job that pays well, and may you can volunteer services from time to time in the underprivileged places if you can find time.

  17. William Wellham says:

Join the military, make a decent salary and get your loans paid off for free. Additionally, never trust anything that is not in a contract.

  18. whobitmyname says:

Sadly, this won't open any eyes, because the average Трамп voter isn't intelligent enough to incur student debt.

  19. Daniel W says:

What colleges need to do is heavily decrease the price. They are completely ripping you off- the entire college industry is to get money out of you, they dont care about your education. If anything they want you to fail so you have to pay more to retake the class. Colleges could easily still thrive if they charged half of what they want. If primary and secondary schools can make it off of small taxes, colleges can reduce their price. A bunch of selfish cucks.

  20. Feliciano Frontado says:

These people need to sue the government like yesterday.

You fuckers are too retarded to take lessons from other countries, because USA #1, right? You refuse to accept that anything that came from outside your country could possibly be better than the SHIT, the absolute DOGSHIT, policies that you come up with yourselves. You have such a GIANT superiority complex that you close your eyes to everything that didn't come from one of you brainwashed idiots.

  45. John A says:

    Lol…

  46. Alex Werges says:

We can all thank Betsy DeVos for this one. I was planning on taking advantage of this program, since I'm working for a 501-3c organization, but looks like Trump wants to screw over poor people even more.

    Time for a lawsuit.

  48. Best Person Ever says:

There mere existence of this program almost influenced me to get my Master's in a low paying field I was passionate about. Glad I passed on that. Too many uncertainties in America right now to go in crippling debt intentionally.

  52. abukamoon says:

Let me explain how government guaranteed student loans work. The Education Lobby succeeded in get the Department of Education created. Then, the federal government began issuing student loans to pay for tuition. We were supposed to believe that this was to benefit education, or the students. But the truth is, it was to benefit the Education Lobby.

Student loans enabled the colleges to double their tuition rates. Students were left with tens of thousands of dollars of debt. And if they defaulted, the taxpayers picked up the bill. This is how corrupt government works. Our politicians are just political prostitutes ready to sell legislation to the highest bidder.

  58. NILgravity says:

I don't know why we are picking on government. Private companies pull this sort of shit all the time!

  59. Mr.s Mr.s says:

Not the governments job to bail people out who made bad choices. The writing was on the wall for decades that collage is a bad investment. Spend a ton of $ on a piece of paper (degree) that will more then likely on never return is value for you. Now libtards who were promised the world on a stick and stupid enough to buy it are mad that its not how the real world works and want even more hand outs. HAHA

  60. Cathy Vickers says:

Question: is the change of heart because this' now the DeVoss Department of Education?? Maybe the twit didn't know! (I know that's no excuse, since she's had plenty of time to be briefed, but you have to wonder…)

  61. Pyrolonn says:

If it wasn't the government I'd say it was a simple contract case, the acceptance letter is a contract. The government can probably do this, but its absurdity will probably get them to do the right thing.

And all the people are on the street protesting!
    Oh, wait, no…it's murrica.

  63. Daniel W says:

Libtards are outraged when they are denied free money. Give me a break, you're lucky the govt even considered paying your college loans, and you are going to have the nerve to complain when they dont give u any money? We got homeless people dying on the streets- the govt isnt going to give their money to some middle class spoiled students who are tired of living securely in their parents house. Dont go to college if you cant afford it. Want free college? Go to a commie country

  68. TJ Michael says:

Ana has a net worth of $1 million. She would never earn that money elsewhere. She's a little bit of a bimbo imo. Cenk made you Ana.

  71. AlSween says:

I didn't believe the Government was repaying when IG Models were posting the debt forgiveness program as ads.

  72. jmitterii2 says:

This is compensation breach. If any employer provides benefits and you sign your wage/salary contract and fail to deliver, it's a breach of contract.

  73. Bruce LeeRoy says:

I'm just curious as to why Ana says she decided to make less? That seems a bit uncool to say in front of your long time boss. Where can she go to make more?

  74. Ernest Kotey says:

I hope someone in the DOE has realized a class action lawsuit is coming.

  75. philpott kentucky says:

They should sue for loss of profit due to taking lower paid jobs.

  79. Compilation Extraordinaire says:

The people running the government are emotionless

  80. Mary Walters says:

These people have just wasted ten years of their lives. They've been scammed. Come on guys rise up and protest! Get pissed.

  81. Andrew Rai says:

Yup this make you just want to move to Canada or Ireland. A lot of my friends opted out of going to college in the US and went to Ireland, Sweden and Norway, they paid a fraction of what they would pay her and got a better education. And guess what after experiencing how those governments treat their citizens non of them ever want to live back in the US ever again. Can't blame them

  82. Addison Clarke says:

This is absolutely atrocious. 10 years of your life gone working at a job that you don't even want. And the fact that after 10 years you haven't made enough money to pay off your student loans is even more horrendous. Wtf America.

  83. Eliza Miller says:

I wonder where all that money/interest students are paying goes to? To the public school system? Let's be real probably defense and bailouts.

  84. Eliza Miller says:

    I would sue the DOE.

  85. AndreNickatlna says:

Pay the loans yourselves you dead beats. You signed the agreement now abide by the terms.

  86. Tylr says:

government doesn't and can't give what it hasn't already stolen…this is fundamentally why it is always bad.

  87. Ana Marrero says:

I am in a loan forgiveness program right now with Fed Loan servicing. Currently I pay zero dollars a month but it could change in the future if my income increases significantly. After 20 years in this program my loans are supposed to be forgiven. Hearing this story is very concerning because if that happened to those students after only ten years what the hell am I supposed to expect after 20?

  88. ocelotecpatl says:

    I'm glad I didn't fall for it.

  89. Entropy says:

They screwed up big time! Do know how many people went to law school and became public defenders because of this promise? Last thing you want to do is piss off a bunch of lawyers, I'll tell you that.

  90. likquidsteel says:

Don't these people who participated in the debt forgiveness program have a case in court against the Department of Education? Seems like it's easy to prove the clear-cut breach of contract by DOE.

  91. Randy M says:

I wish graduates would be as enthusiastic about attending student debt protests or rallies as they are about attending their alma mater's football games. Nothing will EVER get done about this issue. Can't wait to see the non-reaction when social security is gutted.

  92. shaylas78 says:

It will be interesting to see!! The first wave of people will be forgiven in October of this year.

  93. lextacy2008 says:

Just let the bubble pop. The govnt will have to get its act together.

  94. Daniel Edmondson says:

this is that bitch Betsy DeVos doing , she hates any one who is pulling them selves up. It is time for the people to rise up and through this government down

  95. askemone says:

Just lmfao at all the retards that cannot do basic math and signed up for this bullshit. Fools taking $30k/year jobs because they hope big daddy government will forgive their loans. Guess what? You could have found a job that paid double or more and paid off your student loans in 3 years or less if you were aggressive enough and lived like a college student. But no, gotta get that Starbucks everyday and the new iPhone every year. Just LMAO at all of you!

  96. Broke and Caffeinated says:

Sadly by the time I’m dead, my loan will probably still be alive.

  97. Nicholas Jacquet says:

If a person allows their govt to dictate to them how they are gonna live their life, then they are still technically getting what they "want" from the system with this, they should be happy!

  98. Bradley Frueh says:

Read the report. Most borrows were denied because they did not meet the requirements and or had missing information on their applications. You have to work full time for a qualifying employer (501c3 not-for-profits or a government job at any level), make payments on an income-based repayment plan, make 120 on time payments on said plan, and only direct loans can be forgiven (subsizided and unsubsided direct loans, direct plus loans, and direct consolidation loans). The program doesn't deny people on a whim, they deny people who messed up.

  99. Time 2 stick 2gether !! Thomas says:

WHAT A CROOKED, AND GREEDY, ADMINISTRATION THAT BETSY, DONALD, AND THE REPUBLICANS RUN.
