Helping Latinos Get Small Business Loans

¡Buenas tardes! I’m honored to be in the presence of the
leaders and influences of our community. I’m here to have a conversation. A conversation about a simple problem in a
massive market. I’m here to talk to you about the largest
and fastest-growing underbanked business segment in the United States. Not surprisingly, you guys know who I’m
talking about. I’m talking about Vanesa and Carlos that
own the corner store right down the street. There are 4.1 million Hispanic-owned businesses
in the United States. That constitutes about 14 percent of our businesses;
that’s growing double the rate relative to non-Hispanic businesses since 2002. And yet, when Carlos and Vanesa go to the
bank, they are more likely than not to get rejected by them. There isn’t a bank of skill in the United
States that is going to make a bet and be the first lender to this underbanked community. That’s gonna change. At Camino Financial our solution is simple. When banks say no, we say, “¡Claro que
sí!” (“Of course!”). Camino Financial is a credit marketplace that
matches underbanked businesses with alternative or non-banked sources of capital. You see, this is not just a business for me. My mom was a small business-owner. She moved in from Mexico and opened a Mexican
restaurant. After being in business for 25 years, she
opened over 30 doors, but unfortunately, struggled to scale the business, manage it…, didn’t
have the access to talent, and she closed her doors down. We moved back to Mexico and thought the American
dream was gone. Not on our watch. Never again.
