I love you Katie. Thank you for standing up for us.

  46. Proteus TG says:

Now this is assuming you don't pay back until after one year?
I would hope to god that people pay 200 dollars back after one month.
    Still way too high though.
We all know that credit is a scam.
It needs to be fixed, not just discovered over and over again.

  47. Thor Marnix says:

I'm totally for what she is doing, but she's wrong. The APR is 260.71%, not 520%. While one can add the loan origination fee to the principal to calculate the APR, it is not part of the interest rate calculation. The fee must be disclosed, but it isn't part of the interest APR calculation. If someone paid the loan off instantly, they would still pay the $20 fee, even at a 0% interest – that's the "trick." You can "call" it the "loan fee" but it's not. The loan "interest" is $20. The fee to start the process is separate regardless of what she "calls" it from a disclosure standpoint. The irony is that if she told a customer that, she would be breaking the law. If you're going to attempt elitist, intellectually superior sleight of hand, you should make sure you're not wrong. P.S. Even if the finance fee was $40, it would be 521.43%, not 520%. That disclosure would also be against the law according the Appendix J of Regulation Z.

  48. AmpRider says:

After running the math more times than I care to admit, it's 521%. She did correct herself in a tweet right after and explained the math. But honestly I was sure I must be doing something wrong until I saw her tweet after haha. – Also comment on dissenter.

  49. C T says:

Touched! Finally I see a real leader of the United States!

  50. Bernie Cruz says:

Just more proof that Trump has and is appointing and giving jobs of high powered positions to under qualified people who are just there because of their connections and nothing more. Which many people may ask, "so, what? What does this have to do with me?" the answer, EVERYTHING! Because these people are put in charge of society's lives and are running our economy, which let's not forget, are the same people who caused the 2008 Real Estate crash! Which also not forget, destroyed millions of American's lives!!

  55. Feanor Silva says:

"Reclaiming my time" how many times I've wanted to hear a journalist when interviewing someone say "Strike as non- responsive". But this works even better.
I predict this phrase is going to enter common usage, in the form of "So, reclaiming my time …"

  56. sk8queen says:

Another dumb crony pick. The same people who deride affirmative action and say hiring should be merit based show their ignorance and stupidity in such cases as these. The WHOLE trump regime is chock full of arrogant ignoramuses who merit not one cent of what they recieve.

  57. NessOnett8 says:

Educated, competent, logical. Why is it consistently only Democrats that meet this criteria? It's almost like the two parties aren't equal despite that MSNBC constantly says.

With this congress who are most of them lawyers before they ran for office. Rep. Katie Porter was even a law professor before running for office is incredibly smart…maybe Congresswoman Katie Porter should run for president, I would vote for her!

    She's amazing

Those online loan is legalized leech.

  80. xXHamatoYoshiXx says:

The whole reason why there was a recession because of big banks lending subprime loans to people that they targeted which they knew were basically ticking time bombs, then threatened the government to bail them out with taxpayer dollars.

  81. xXHamatoYoshiXx says:

It's really easy to calculate this…
    Origination fee + Finance Charge = $40
    Loan Amount = $200
    40/200 = .2
    .2 x 365 (days in a year) = 73
    73/14 (term of loan) = 5.214
    5.214 x 100% = 521.4% APR

The fact that even I could find information on how to properly calculate a APR and that this woman has no clue should definitely show that this woman does not need to be in the position that she's in, and with such an easy calculation that she should totally be familiar with she shouldn't be doing anything that requires any kind of math whatsoever.

    Way to go congresswoman!

  88. Bob Beatty says:

Most liberals won't understand where she went wrong. "I'm stuck on the side of the road, and now it is the Governments fault that I can't be responsible enough to save for an emergency". No personal accountability, just statements about how the person is suffering because they have not been responsible, but somehow it is the Governments fault and the Government should give them something. Like I said, most of you liberals will not, cannot or just won't get it. "#letmeremainavictim

  91. Jan B says:

The copound interest rate makes it even worse. If you let a loan that size run for a year, you have to pay back more than a 1000% – more than $ 2000 in interests for an original loan of 200$. That is simply unethical.
