Retired Admiral, Navy Federal Credit Union CEO Discusses What Navy Taught Him

MY NAME IS CUTLER DAWSON. I’M THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF NAVY FEDERAL
CREDIT UNION AND I’M A PROUD NAVY VETERAN. MUSIC PLAYING MY PARENTS WERE BOTH IN THE NAVY DURING WORLD
WAR II. THEY WERE BOTH OFFICERS. MY DAD WAS A PILOT AND MY MOM WAS A WAVE AND
THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A TREMENDOUS IDEA FOR MY BOTHER AND I TO GO TO THE NAVAL ACADEMY.
AND WE DID. MY CAREER IN THE NAVY WAS PRETTY SIMPLE. I GRADUATED FROM THE NAVAL ACADEMY IN 1970. I WAS A SURFACE WARFARE OFFICER. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME UNDERWAY ON SHIPS AND
THEN, WHEN I WASN’T UNDERWAY AWAY, WHEN I WAS ON SHORE DUTY, I WAS ASSIGNED IN WASHINGTON
DC. IT WAS A PRETTY SIMPLE EQUATION FOR ME, AND
I LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF IT. MUSIC PLAYING MY SERVICE IN THE NAVY TAUGHT ME LESSONS THAT
HAVE CARRIED WITH ME AND THAT I WILL CARRY WITH ME FOREVER. RUNNING A CREDIT UNION IS ABOUT RISK MANAGEMENT. OPERATING IN THE NAVY IS ABOUT RISK MANAGEMENT. IT’S SOMETHING THAT ALL OF US DO EVERY DAY
WHILE WE’RE IN THE SERVICE. EVALUATING WHAT THE MISSION IS AND WHAT THE
RISKS ARE TO GET US TO THAT GOAL OF SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION. IT IS NO DIFFERENT IN BUSINESS. JUST DIFFERENT RISKS AND DIFFERENT REWARDS. I WOULD TELL ANY SERVICEMAN, ANY SAILOR IN
THE NAVY, WHETHER THEY’RE ON THEIR FIRST ENLISTMENT, OR THEY ARE RETIRING, THAT WHEN YOU GET OUT
OF THE NAVY, THE LEADERSHIP LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED WILL STAND YOU IN GREAT STEAD. THE TIME THAT YOU’VE HAD IN THE SERVICE ARE
LIKE DOG YEARS. FOR EVERY ONE THAT YOU’VE HAD, IT’S LIKE HAVING
TEN YEARS AND DON’T EVER FORGET THAT.
