Suspect in Fort Wayne credit union robberies captured


BARS. POLICE SAY THE SUSPECT WAS CAPTURED WITHIN AN HOUR OF LAST NIGHT’S ROBBERY.. WANE 15’S ANGELICA ROBINSON JOINS US LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM WITH MORE DETAILS. POLICE WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE ROBBERY SUSPECT AFTER RELEASING A SURVIELLENCE PHOTO – AND ASKING FOR THE PUBLIC’S HELP. THIS 59 YEAR OLD MICHEAL COATES. HE FACES TWO FELONY CHARGES OF ARMED ROBBERY. WE’VE ALSO LEARNED THAT HE FACES A SEPERATE BURGLARY CHARGE AFTER POLICE SAY HE BROKE INTO A HOME AND STOLE TWO GUNS. ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, THE GUNS WERE STOLEN A DAY BEFORE THE FIRST BANK ROBBERY. POLICE WERE FIRST CALLED TO THE “THREE RIVERS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION” NEAR ST. JOE CENTER AND MAPLECREST ROADS LAST THURSDAY. COURT DOCUMENTS SAY COATES HANDED A BANK TELLER A NOTE THAT SAID -QUOTE – “GIVE ME 25-HUNDRED DOLLARS. DON’T SAY ANYTHING TO ANYBODY ELSE, I AM ARMED.” HE RETURNED TO THE SAME LOCATION YESTERDAY. AN EMPLOYEE RECOGNIZED COATES BECAUSE HE WEARING THE SAME CLOTHES, GLASSES AND HAD THE SAME HAIR STYLE. HE APPROACHED A TELLER AND SAID “PUT A GRAND UP HERE” WHILE TAPPING HIS FINGER ON THE COUNTER. THEN, HE TOLD THE TELLER THAT HE WAS THERE LAST WEEK. POLICE SAY THEY CAUGHT THE SUSPECT ABOUT 45-MINUTES LATER ON U-S 24, JUST PAST THE INDIANA-OHIO LINE. THEY FOUND 970 DOLLARS IN HIS PANTS POCKET, ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS.
