Trump Wants To Ban Federal Student Loans

NOW THAT DONALD TRUMP WILL BE
THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, MANY STUDENTS WITH A
CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT ARE WONDERING,
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM? WHAT DOES TRUMP PLAN TO DO WITH
STUDENT LOAN DEBTS, AND MAKING COLLEGE AFFORDABLE FOR
PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE IN THE FUTURE? IT’S REALLY DIFFICULT TO
DECIPHER WHAT HE WILL DO, BECAUSE HE HASN’T BEEN VERY
SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT HE’S IN FAVOR OF, AND WHAT HE PLANS ON
DISMANTLING. BUT WE DO HAVE LITTLE BITS AND
PIECES BASED ON WHAT HE SAID IN THE PAST. TOP HAS SAID THROUGHOUT HIS
CAMPAIGN THAT HE WANTS TO DO AWAY WITH THE FEDERAL STUDENT
LOAN PROGRAM. A LOT OF REPUBLICANS, A LOT OF
CONSERVATIVES, ARE NOT IN FAVOR OF THE FEDERAL STUDENT
LOAN PROGRAM. THEY THINK THAT ARTIFICIALLY
INFLATES THE COST OF GOING TO COLLEGE, WHICH, IT DOES HAVE AN
IMPACT, BUT THAT’S NOT THE FULL REASON WHY STUDENT LOANS
AND TUITION HAS GONE UP. BUT HERE’S WITH THE FEDERAL
STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM DID DO: FOR ONE, IT KEEPS THE INTEREST RATES
FOR REPAYMENT LOW, SO THAT STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO WORRY
ABOUT GOING TO PRIVATE LENDERS THAT USUALLY HAVE EXORBITANT
FEES, OR INTEREST RATES TIED TO THESE LOANS. HE ALSO SUPPORTS MOVING THE
FEDERAL LOAN SYSTEM TO PRIVATE BANKS, MAKING THE
STUDENT LOAN SYSTEM A MARKETPLACE AND MARKET-DRIVEN. SO THERE’S ALSO A DOWNSIDE TO
THAT. UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION
THERE’S SOMETHING KNOWN AS THE REPAYMENT PLAN, AND WHAT THEY DO
IS THEY LOOK AT YOUR INCOME ñ AS SOMEONE WHO HAS GRADUATED
FROM COLLEGE AND IS NOW PART OF THE WORKFORCE ñ AND THEY
DECIDE, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU DON’T SPEND ALL OF YOUR MONEY
PAYING BACK YOUR STUDENT LOANS. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU
HAVE A PAYMENT PLAN SET IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU
STILL HAVE SOME DISPOSABLE INCOME, AND SOME MONEY LEFT OVER
TO BE PART OF THE ECONOMY. INCOME-BASED REPAYMENTS WILL
STAY COMPARABLE TO THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION. BORROWERS WILL PAY 12.5% OF THEIR INCOME EVERY MONTH,
BUT UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS ONLY FOR FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS
THAT ALREADY EXIST. IF DONALD TRUMP DOES AWAY WITH
ALL FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS IN THE FUTURE, MEANING YOU CAN’T GET
FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS IN THE FUTURE, WELL THEN THIS LOAN
REPAYMENT PLAN WON’T EVEN EXIST. BECAUSE PRIVATE LENDERS DON’T DO
THIS, PRIVATE LENDERS ARE LIKE, YOU HAVE TO PAY ME, I
DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR INCOME OR ANY OF THAT STUFF, PAY
ME. ANOTHER THING THAT HAPPENS WITH
PRIVATE BANKS IS, IT MIGHT BE A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO GET A
LOAN, BECAUSE THEY MIGHT LOOK AT YOUR MAJOR AND THEY MIGHT
DECIDE, WE’RE NOT REALLY INTO THAT ART MAJOR, OR WE’RE NOT
REALLY INTO THAT SOCIOLOGY MAJOR. YOU WANT TO BE A SOCIAL WORKER? SOCIAL WORKERS DON’T MAKE A LOT
OF MONEY, SO MAYBE WE ARE NOT TO GIVE YOU THE LOAN
NECESSARY TO GET YOUR EDUCATION. SO THERE’S A BIG PROBLEM WITH
THAT AS WELL. SO FOR HALF A SECOND IN THIS
STORY I THOUGHT, IS THIS ONE OF THE POSITIVE THINGS THAT DONALD
TRUMP AT LEAST PROMISED TO DO? WRONG. RIGHT. IS IT SOUNDED LIKE HE WAS
ARGUMENT AGAINST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MAKING $40
BILLION FROM STUDENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, ELIZABETH WARREN
HAS SAID, WHEN WE GIVE STUDENTS THE SAME INTEREST RATE
THAT WE GIVE TO TOP BANKS? IS NEARLY 0%. IF THEY’RE ALLOWED TO BORROW AT
0% ñ VIDEO BUFFERING ñ LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM, NO WAY! RIGHT? SO I THOUGHT, WILL HE DO
SOMETHING TO TRY TO BE POPULOUS? FAKE POPULACE, BUT HE’S GOING TO
CHANGE HIS MIND. BUT THEN WHEN YOU READ INTO IT,
AS ANA POINTED OUT, IT’S A DISASTER. HE SAYS THE GOVERNMENT SHOULDN’T
MAKE THAT MONEY, MY FRIENDS IN THE BANKING COMMUNITY SHOULD
MAKE THAT MONEY. AND THEY SHOULD MAKE WAY MORE
MONEY IN INTEREST THAN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS MADE. NOW UNDERSTAND, I HATED THE FACT
THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT EVEN HAD INTEREST RATES THAT
WERE HIGHER THAN WHAT THE BANKS WERE PAYING. I THOUGHT THAT ELIZABETH WARREN
WAS SPOT ON WITH LOWERING INTEREST RATES FOR FEDERAL
STUDENT LOANS. BUT UNDERSTAND THAT DONALD TRUMP
IS NOT IN THE SAME CAMP AS ELIZABETH WARREN. HE WANTS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU
DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO LOW INTEREST RATES AT ALL IF YOU’RE
A STUDENT. YOU HAVE TO PRIVATE BANKS, AND
THIS IDEA, THIS NOTION OF THE FREE MARKETPLACE, WE ALL
KNOW THAT’S NOT THE REALITY. WE ALL KNOW, AS PAST AND
CURRENT STUDENTS, AS POTENTIAL FUTURE STUDENTS WHO HAVE LOOKED
INTO THIS, PRIVATE LOANS ALWAYS HAVE A HIGHER INTEREST
RATE. A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER INTEREST
RATE. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOESN’T
HAVE A PROFIT MOTIVE, BUT THE BANKS DO. THAT PROFIT MOTIVE, IN MY
OPINION, MAKES SENSE IN A LOT OF WAYS. IF YOU ARE STARTING A BUSINESS,
THE BANK NEEDS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE
MONEY. NOT RUNNING A CHARITY HERE. IF YOU’RE BUYING A HOUSE, IT
NEEDS TO MAKE SURE YOU CAN AFFORD THE HOUSE. I’M A CAPITALIST, I BELIEVE IN
ALL THAT. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATION
SO THAT AMERICAN CITIZENS HAVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, NOT
RESULTS BUT OPPORTUNITY, AND WE HEADED OVER TO THE
BANKERS, WELL THEY HAVE NO ALLEGATION TO AMERICAN CITIZENS. THEY SAY NO, NOW YOU’RE PLAYING
BY MY RULES. I CAN CHARGE WHAT I WANT, AND I
CAN PUNISH WHICHEVER MAJORS I THINK ARE NOT LUCRATIVE ENOUGH. OH YOU’RE GOING INTO PUBLIC
SERVICE? WITH YOUR TEACHER, OR MAYBE A
SOLDIER, I DON’T GIVE A DAMN WHAT YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING
TO DO IN PUBLIC SERVICE, PAY ME NOW. YOU WON’T GET TO DELAY IT FOR
ANY REASON. DURING THE PRIMARIES, BOTH
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES, HILLARY CLINTON AND BERNIE SANDERS,
TALKED ABOUT DEBT FORGIVENESS. UNDER TRUMP, DEBT FORGIVENESS IS
NOT A POSSIBILITY, HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN DEBT
FORGIVENESS WHATSOEVER. UNLESS, OF COURSE, IT’S FOR
DONALD TRUMP. HIS WHOLE CAREER WAS BASED ON
DEBT FORGIVENESS. HE WENT BANKRUPT SIX DIFFERENT
TIMES. HE DROVE HIS COMPANIES INTO
BANKRUPTCY, AND THEN BRAGGED ABOUT IT. HE SAID ONCE YOU GO INTO
BANKRUPTCY, YOU HAVE TO PAY YOUR DEBTS. NOW IF YOU SAID, WAIT A MINUTE,
I WAS JUST TRYING TO LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM, ETC. I DON’T CARE, HERE’S MY AMERICAN
DREAM FOR YOU, I CRUSH YOU AND YOUR NEVER ALLOWED TO ESCAPE
THOSE DEBTS, JUST LIKE I DID TO BECOME RICH. UNBELIEVABLE HYPOCRISY! SO, THE GUY WHO ARGUED AGAINST
THE BANKERS ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, TALKED ABOUT GLOBAL
FINANCIAL INTERESTS ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, NOW SAYS,
YOU GO BANKERS, HERE’S A MULTITRILLION DOLLAR MARKET I
JUST HANDED OVER TO YOU. DRAIN THE SWAMP, HE IS
THE SWAMP.

  5. MrGaming91 says:

Since the government got involved in student loans the cost of college tuition has sky rocketed because the schools know that the loans are guaranteed and students will have to pay them. It's common sense.

  6. MrGaming91 says:

    Debt forgiveness…

How would that work? Someone would have to pay for it regardless which would be the American people. Taxes would go up to cover the debt. And what about the people who paid off a large portion or all of their student loan debt…do they get their money back. Wouldn't be fair for people to who tried paying their loan off quicker and then suddenly the debt is gone.

I still live with my parents and have been trying to pay off my student loan while in school and after graduation. I have been paying more than I have to for my student loan just to get ahead. For the debt to be taken away all at once would seem like a waste of money. I could have just paid the minimum and save the money instead.

As an Arts Major, I think students who need loans for degrees that won't generate immediate revenue should not get loans. Furthermore the cost of education in America is ridiculous in part because of accessibility to loans. If Universities had half of their student body drop out because the degrees weren't worth the cost AND they didn't have the money via loans, perhaps the yearly cost for many degrees would be more reasonable? I've profited more from $1,500 courses than the tens of thousands I spent on University. I did learn a great deal but it wasn't immediately applicable. However in Canada the cost of my education was low enough I was able to pay out of hands after my first year. For many years, students would work, save up, THEN try to get a degree. There are benefits to this.

How many billions and billions of dollars were spent on political campaigns this season? And yet we cant educate our children or provide healthcare. Our priorities are so out of whack its not even funny. Just what the big banks need..more money. Thanks Donald. I have a kid going to college in two years..I have no idea how to pay for it. The money we have saved isnt going to be close to enough. The cost of college has FAR outpaced inflation by a large amount…The Rich n the is country do not want an educated population. They want uneducated consumers to make their crappy products and then buy them. wake up america.

  24. Gregory Navasarkian says:

Student loans are what make the price of college so high. The govt basically gives colleges a free pass to charge whatever they want because the government will give out loans. If universities are not guaranteed to make as much money as they want they will be required to make the educational system better because people will realize that certain degrees are worthless and what professors teach is complete bullshit in the real world. Just like politicians professors are blind to the real world and they teach those stupid subjects because after they got their degrees in things like humanities they noticed that there actually is no practical use for humanities and so they just simply teach it. SCHOOLS ARE BUISNESSES AND JUST LIKE WALMART THEIR MAIN GOAL IS TO MAKE MONEY. THEY DONT CARE ABOUT EDUACTING PEOPLE AND THEY USE STUDENT LOANS AS PART OF THEIR TOOLKIT TO MAKE MONEY.

On the economic side cutting student loans will help to shrink the already massive government and save money so that the government can finally stop spending money that they don't have and never had in the first place.

  25. Spiritual Anarchist says:

I got an idea…Just keep the U.S military out of some foreign country for..say a year?….That would provide for thousands kids to get a education for…free..yep..REALLY IT'S THAT SIMPLE

  26. gary dubrall says:

cancell student debtin bankruptcy like trump has his business dealings.

  27. Jo Pao says:

So trumpy will resolve the student debt problem by releasing the free market forces… are we talking of the same free market forces that forced the feds to step in? I mean, those free market forces are already there… it's just that their prices stink. But hey, if they have less competition, their prices will be better? No, they'll only get worse.

Time for American universities to focus on teaching, not on football stadiums, swimming pools and all that crap. That alone would permit the average citizen to end up with way less student debt. Universities are nearly free over here which means everyone can (in theory… ofc, some upbringings stink and have low statistical success) end up with a valuable diploma and it costs a lot less to the community. Just like healthcare is better over here and costs a lot less to the community. But nope. You again voted for a republican born billionaire that pretends everybody has the same chances… as long as that goes on, you can't hope to compare with the rest of the first world in education and healthcare. Just remember… trumpy made nearly a billion by going bankrupt on 3 casinos… yes, failing gave him a billion… now tell me the game is fair. Luckily, he has a plan… reduce imposition on billionaires… yup, that's going to do wonders when they already playing "you can't loose" and barely paying any taxes or in the case of trumpy, no taxes at all.

And young people… you do remember how some of you were telling us voting for the lesser of two evils was blabla… well, welcome to the worse of two "evils". Enjoy.

  28. E Suzannet says:

So what is the end-game here, in the minds of people pulling the strings? Most of the living-wage industrial jobs without college education requirements are gone or leaving, so those aren't even an option anymore. So we're just going to have a nation full of service workers in the retail and fast food industries because no one could afford an education that would have provided them with other opportunities? What would that nation even look like? We'd have very few people (only rich kids) going into science and technology fields, so very little innovation. We'll have far fewer doctors, of any kind, fewer lawyers, or any profession requiring an advanced degree. Hell, we won't even have enough people who went through teaching college to meet our public school's needs. We'll have a country full of people who can't afford to shop at Wal-Mart, because they're making $8.00/hr working at Wal-Mart. So even our gigantic businesses will go under, because there won't be enough people spending money at their establishments for them to sustain themselves, much less grow. So even the customer service jobs will go away, and we will have nothing left. America will be a veritable wasteland.

This is how America gets destroyed. And we'll have done it to ourselves.

  29. Radix Malorum says:

You people don't get it. Federal student loans is what's making tuition so expensive in the first place. When you flood the market with fed backed loans to students you are creating artificial demand which ends up causing price hikes. This is basic shit. Obviously we shouldn't give loans to students that want to take useless fucking majors like gender studies that makes no money and isn't in demand by the markets. They're going to end up working at a starbucks and not even being able to pay that loan back. Notice how tuition rates started skyrocketing right after they implemented this whole system of federal student loans. This whole system needs to be totally removed and loans should be given out just like any other loan. Wake up already.

  30. Edward Chang says:

If you default on federal student loans you should have to join the military. Boom

  31. Anthony G says:

Government sponsored or funded education is not a right. There are many ways to earn an education if you have the motivation and drive to pursue it.

  32. Anthony G says:

Americans are going to probably find out sooner rather than later that the freebies and perks are going to come to an abrupt halt. We are 20 trillion in the hole folks, more going out than is coming in probably close to a major economic crash. Learn self reliancy and fast.

  33. Pepe says:

in the UK you pay your tuition fees back after you start earning £21,000 a year at 9% which is deducted out of your income as general tax for 30 years at no interest. Our fees are rising but our system seems better and the UK has a very high standard of university education as well.

  34. Rocky Mountain Overland says:

  35. jackchorn says:

Reagan made it harder for many to get Fed loans by raising the age of dependence and lowering the income- I could not afford to go to college then. So now here we are- things have just gotten worse- another 4 years- Banks should be Nationalized.

  36. Michael Charrys says:

Do these guys understand supply and demand? This is a load of bull

  37. Geesedude says:

I wouldn't be completely opposed to reduced loans, with a program to support people wanting to learn trade skills instead.

  38. Silbaugh4liberty says:

stupid, market driven will tighten lending and keep college affordable. And it is stupid to give $40k for an arts major, or liberal arts. it does make sense for a business and MBA major, but keeping it competitive. Second, statute of limitations and FDCPA, FCRA laws would then apply to the banks, when these laws don't exist in these phony government backed loans

  39. Silbaugh4liberty says:

also, they tacked on $15k in fees to my government backed loans, so I'm sure they have my best interests at heart

  40. Marc Gunyon says:

  41. radio c says:

LOL at the people who thought he would run the country great because he was a businessman with lot of money. They see jets, helicopters bearing his name. They think his short, reality show type stinging remarks were cool. Like how dare would this rich guy run for president and then wind up being selfish? No way dude! haha. They thought he'd be this bass ass to run our country better because he made money (even though he went bankrupt and had to be bailed out). I saw this coming a million miles away, and it won't stop here. The man is greedy to the core. And if he does something, it's always a show to prove he's not greedy. He fools everyone 95% of the time. I see right through him.

I hope Trump does follow through with shutting the loan program down.
If the "students of higher learning" have to buy and pay for the product they will appreciate it more and force the ungrateful leaches to protest the country and burn the flag on their own dime.
That will be fine with every back breaking tax payer in the country.

  47. Societal Preferences says:

i hate trump. but federal aid does contribute to making college so expensive its all supply and demand, if you create a higher demand by giving out loans to nearly anyone who applies for them the colleges can increase tuition prices because of these guaranteed loans. since most college students seem to be fiscally short sided, they come out of school with huge amounts of debt that they cant pay off because theyre working for minimum wage… everything about the u.s. educational system from kindergarten to higher levels of education is broken, making it free wont make it more affordable all you do is remove consumer preference and now youve just completely monopolized the system, those dollars get printed by the fed or they are taxed. there is a common misconception that government is better at negotiating price points because theyre "for the people" however in reality its the lobby who negotiates incentives for price increases. the way supply and demand is always graphed is you have a demand curve that crosses a supply curve, the supply curve moves from 0 (x,y) to the top right / the demand curve starts at the top of the y (0 on x) in this example , and ends at the end of x axis, both of these lines intersect in the middle. the goal of the supply and demand chart is to establish a point of equilibrium (where the supply and demand intersect). so x being quantity of students, and y being the cost of attending a university you would think we would have established pricing equilibrium but this is not the case and the problem lies in the demand curve. since the government has now increased the demand for applications by making college more affordable short term. this means the demand curve shifts outwards, however the supply is unchanged. now we start by graphing the line on the x axis but since the demand curve was shifted to the right we no longer meet in equilibrium (where supply and demand intersect) instead we now have x running through a higher demand curve with supply unchanged, since the x and y axis directly correlate we now plot moving left from where x intersects the supply curve directly to the y axis. remember the y axis is the cost, since x is higher on the demand curve and higher on the supply curve this means its cost has increased accordingly. its common sense based on simple arithmetic only using variables.

  48. Societal Preferences says:

im tired of the young turks un educating people with this bernie sanders nonsense, instead of understand theres a problem with giving short term artificially set low interest rates that are given out to banks and major institutions they want to take the short cut and ask for the same thing as if artificially set pricing points work. here a little letter from the congress on the subject. During the financial crisis, the Board invoked its emergency lending authority for the first time
in 75 years. The scope of the Board's program was staggering. Between 2.007 and 2009, the
Board's emergency lending facilities provided over §13 trillion in loans to large domestic and
    foreign financial institutions.2
These loans were another bailout in all but name. Of the nearly S9 trillion the Board provided
through its largest facility – the Primary Dealer Credit Facility – over two-thirds went to just
three institutions: Citigroup, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley,5
    Those institutions and others
had access to the Board's credit facilities for an average of 22 months/1
And the interest rates the Board offered were typically very low – in many cases, under 1 %.5
By lending to a select group
of large financial institutions at below market rates for nearly two years, the Board was
essentially propping up institutions that were viewed as "Too Big to Fail." this is artificial stimulus for corporations because of the NEGATIVE outlook on business conditions in order to change public perception. you have a failing business? take lots of cheap credit to grow and develop in order to increase your outstanding shares price in order to create a perception. so what did the young turks just say? colleges are failing? lets give lots of cheap credit to students in order to ARTIFICIALLY increase college participation rates. its a very socialist point of view… the young turks will never understand the difference between real growth, and short term artificial inflation.

  49. Rich Trost says:

Many European countries realize that a highly educated public is the key to future success of their nation and provide education at no cost to students.  Here in the states we seem to feel that success as a nation depends on making the rich richer and the best education should go to those who can afford it.  But hey.  We can spend more on the military than all those weenie liberal countries combined so it all evens out.

  53. Jason Magik says:

According to the us dept of education the default rate is about 11.3%. That number is relatively huge by itself, but it is very misleading. Of the remaining 88.7% who are paying, a large percentage of payments are being made by parents. Not that there's anything wrong with that but in my opinion it doesn't really count towards "students being able to pay their debt" statistic. Another large portion of that are students who are paying themselves but are struggling greatly and may ultimately end up defaulting after 3 years. The real number is more like 40-50% that aren't able pay.

  54. Aye Itsjose1 says:

  55. Tom Ganks says:

    4 head kappa

  56. Wilson23 says:

It's simple – make higher education free with minor fees (50$ for certain services per semester). And dismantle an idea of college as state-of-art compound full of additional services (pool, cinema, theater, stadiums, fraternity houses, high-tech laboratories, cinema and art studios, et cet). College should be a place where you go to listen to lectures, talk and debate with other students, pass exams and then go home.
Late capitalism in its neoliberal form thrives on indebtedness of its citizens. As capitalist/banker/wall street speculator/stock holder/private investor/rentier you can accumulate capital on indebtedness almost indefinitely. Debt is crucial for late capitalism. That's why it's important for neoliberal capitalism that all citzens are enslaved in perpetual debt.

Student loans are a scam. Low-income people applying for financial assistance shouldn't be offered loans. We need tuition-free college or scholarships, grants, etc.

  62. OccupyYourMind says:

An educated populace is vital to a democratic society. When the population is dumbed-down, they aren't qualified to participate in government. Student loans are a way to prevent people from getting an education while penalizing those who defy the odds against them by going to college anyway.

  63. OccupyYourMind says:

I heard Bernie Sanders speak in person. He didn't promise student debt forgiveness. He promised to lower the interest rates of the loans, not to forgive them. Jill Stein made the promise to forgive student loans.

  77. Alex Milledge says:

If Trump is ever vague about particular issues, look at the typical conservative position. On the subject student loans, there are two things he will probably do – he will either do away with consumer protections on student loans or he will make student loans private. i think he will continue student loans but will begin to charge extorbitant interest rates and reduce protections so that the governmwnt can go after you for larger amounts.

  78. starlitopensky1 says:

    Ban Federal student loans!

A degree doesn't guarantee a job nor an income.

Colleges would lower cost or go under.

Americans are NOT responsible for other people's student loan debt.

Debt forgiveness = increasing the national debt!

trump just needs to force colleges to lower the price of tuition

because anybody with any common sense would know that if colleges know that the government is gonna foot the bill, then of course they're gonna charge students 1 million dollars per semester

so trump just needs to make it clear to the colleges, that you ain't going to charge students a ridiculously high tuition cost, just because the government agrees to foot the bill
